The citation should include the authors last name and page number with the period AFTER the parenthesis.
How
First, Let's review citations
3
Multiple Select
Select all the quotes that have correct citation.

Mrs. Thomas asks, "Why should we live with such hurry and waste of life?" ( pg 29).
Randomly Napoleon, ”uttered a high-pitched whimper. Immediately the dogs bounded forward, seized four pigs by the ear and dragged them” (Orwell pages 82-83
The promise of a better life dawned when his father got “a substitute teaching job at a high school” (Johnson 31).
First, an unjust action occurs when Napoleon and the pigs are inside the house. “Napoleon decreed that there should be a full investigation into Snowballs activities (Orwell 78)”.
4
Rule 1: Complete Sentence
Introduce the quotation with a complete sentence and a colon afterwards
●This needs to address what the character is doing or discussing at that time.
Example:
Della explains to Jim why she cut her hair: “I had my hair cut off and sold it because I couldn't have lived through Christmas without giving you a present” (O.Henry).
OR
This ended up being a concern for the hens: “They were just getting their clutches ready for the spring sitting, and they protested that to take the eggs away now was murder”(Orwell 76).
5
Multiple Choice
Which of the following correctly uses the complete sentence with a colon rule?
The author states: "as winter drew on, Mollie became more and more troublesome" (Orwell 45).
The animals became frustrated with by others not working to their full potential: "as winter drew on, Mollie became more and more troublesome" (Orwell 45).
Snowball discussed that: "... Mollie became more and more troublesome" (Orwell 45).
6
Rule 2: Says Lead-In
Simply state who is speaking in the quote
This only works if a character is talking/ directly saying something
Use brackets to keep with 3rd person
Example:
Della explains to Jim that “[she] had [her] hair cut off and sold it because [she] couldn't have lived through Christmas without giving [him] a present” (O' Henry).
OR

The animals create plans to make a windmill "the plans grew into a complicated mass of cranks and cog-wheels..." (Orwell 49).
8
Rule 3: Embedded Quotes
Embedded Quotes - This is the most difficult!
●Blend your writing with the quote to make a complete sentence
●An easy way to do this is to use one of our sentence starters we studied earlier in the year!
●A comma goes before the quote if it follows any comma rule
Example:
Waverly’s mother’s advice would also help “[her] older brothers and [her] rise above their circumstances” (Tan 1).
OR
