lead in "quote" (Orwell 42).
lead in "quote" (Collins 125).
lead in "quote" (Thomas 30).

example

lead in "Quote" (citation).

The citation should include the authors last name and page number with the period AFTER the parenthesis.

How

First, Let's review citations

3

Multiple Select

Select all the quotes that have correct citation.

1

Jane Smith points out, in her article about the sun, that “only 55% of all Americans know that the sun is a star” (Smith 56).

2

Mrs. Thomas  asks, "Why should we live with such hurry and waste of life?" ( pg 29).

3

Randomly Napoleon, ”uttered a high-pitched whimper. Immediately the dogs bounded forward, seized four pigs by the ear and dragged them” (Orwell pages 82-83

5

First, an unjust action occurs when Napoleon and the pigs are inside the house. “Napoleon decreed that there should be a full investigation into Snowballs activities (Orwell 78)”.

4

Rule 1: Complete Sentence

Introduce the quotation with a complete sentence and a colon afterwards

This needs to address what the character is doing or discussing at that time.

Example:
Della explains to Jim why she cut her hair: “I had my hair cut off and sold it because I couldn't have lived through Christmas without giving you a present” (O.Henry).

OR

This ended up being a concern for the hens: “They were just getting their clutches ready for the spring sitting, and they protested that to take the eggs away now was murder”(Orwell 76).

5

Multiple Choice

Which of the following correctly uses the complete sentence with a colon rule?

1

The author states: "as winter drew on, Mollie became more and more troublesome" (Orwell 45).

2

The animals became frustrated with by others not working to their full potential: "as winter drew on, Mollie became more and more troublesome" (Orwell 45).

3

Snowball discussed that: "... Mollie became more and more troublesome" (Orwell 45).

6

Rule 2: Says Lead-In

  • Simply state who is speaking in the quote

  • This only works if a character is talking/ directly saying something

  • Use brackets to keep with 3rd person

Example:

Della explains to Jim that “[she] had [her] hair cut off and sold it because [she] couldn't have lived through Christmas without giving [him] a present” (O' Henry).

OR

As Clover asks Murial to read over the commandments, Murial says, “It says ‘no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets’ she announced finally” (Orwell 67).

7

3

The animals create plans to make a windmill "the plans grew into a complicated mass of cranks and cog-wheels..." (Orwell 49).

8

Rule 3: Embedded Quotes

Embedded Quotes - This is the most difficult!

Blend your writing with the quote to make a complete sentence

An easy way to do this is to use one of our sentence starters we studied earlier in the year!

A comma goes before the quote if it follows any comma rule

Example:

Waverly’s mother’s advice would also help “[her] older brothers and [her] rise above their circumstances” (Tan 1).

OR

They are all in the yard, then randomly Napoleon,”uttered a high-pitched whimper. Immediately the dogs bounded forward, seized four pigs by the ear and dragged them”(Orwell 82-83)

3

This ended up being a concern for the hens: “They were just getting their clutches ready for the spring sitting, and they protested that to take the eggs away now was murder”(Orwell 76).
