Spain and Hapsburg Empire

  • By the 1500s, Spain had emerged as the first modern European power, Through their marriage, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand had unified the country

    • In 1516, Charles I became King of Spain, and in 1519, his other Grandfather passed, and Charles became ruler of the Hapsburg Empire

    • Charles I took the name Charles V

    • Before stepping down in 1556, he split the kingdom between His brother Ferdinand and his son Phillip II

Phillip II becomes an Absolute Monarch

  • From 1556 to 1598, Philip II ruled the wealthiest and most powerful nation in Europe

    • A dedicated ruler Phillip saw himself as the guardian of the Roman Catholic Church, he defended the Catholic Reformation and turned back the rising tide of Protestants in Europe

    • He fought many wars to advance Spanish Catholic power

    • Queen Elizabeth I stood as his chief Protestant enemy, supporting the Dutch against Spain

  • The decline of the Spanish Empire begin following the rule of Phillip II's reign

    • His successors were less able rulers than him

    • Costly overseas wars drained wealth out of Spain

    • Treasure from the Americas led Spain to neglect farming and commerce

    • the expulsion of Muslims and Jews from Spain deprived them of many skilled artisans and merchants
