By following the four-step writing process, you will learn to critique and revise your own writing to achieve the four Cs of communication.

The Four C's of Communication are the qualities of clarity, conciseness, courtesy, and correctness. These standards apply to all types of written communication.

Communication that contains errors or poor language usage reflects negatively on both you and the business for which you work. Using abbreviations and spelling common to text messages is not acceptable in most business organizations.

Prewriting

The first step in the writing process is prewriting, which is the planning stage. During prewriting you will define the purpose and topic of your writing as well as analyze the audience. Once these steps have been completed, you will gather the information, research ideas, organize your thoughts, and choose a medium. The medium is the form of communication that you will use. It may be written, visual, oral, or digital.

When must the document be complete?

Deadlines are an important consideration. An announcement that is poorly timed may not accomplish what you thought it would. A late proposal, no matter how brilliant, is essentially worthless. Establishing priorities and managing your time will help accommodate all steps of the writing process.

Be prepared ot track down what is needed in a timely manner so that you can write with substance while meeting the deadline.

Media literacy skills include accessing, analyzing, evaluating, and communicating information in various formats that include print and online. When reviewing print or digital materials, it is necessary to access, analyze, and evaluate what you read. Each source should be reviewed for bias and credibility. Keep in mind, what appears in the media may not always be truthful or accurate.
