Poem Structure

Lines: a unit of language into which a poem is divided.

Stanza: a group of lines forming the basic unit in a poem. 

(AKA -a paragraph in a poem)

Elements of Poetry

Symbolism: Use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities, by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense.

Allusion: A brief, intentional reference to a historical, mythic, or literary person, place, event, or movement.

Extended metaphor:

is a metaphor in a literary work, such as a novel or poem, that isn't just used in one line but is extended over multiple lines or throughout the work.

*Alliteration

Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words.

"Moses let the motor run for a moment. "

Sometimes this alliteration adds meaning by reinforcing a sound.  

Imagery

Poets use imagery or language that appeals to the 5 senses, to help readers visualize what they read. It creates the picture in the reader’s mind.

Sight, Hear, Smell, Taste, and Touch

Figurative language communicates ideas beyond the literal meanings of words.

• A simile uses like or as to compare seemingly unlike things.

• A metaphor implies the comparison instead of directly stating it.

• Hyperbole is an extreme exaggeration.

• Poets use personification to write about an idea, an object, or an animal as if it were human.

• Onomatopoeia-  Words from a sound associated with what is named (e.g. cuckoo, boom).

• In a work of literature, tone is the attitude the writer has toward the subject. 

• When there shift, it means there is a change in tone within a poem. ​

• For example: The tone can go from positive to negative or vice versa. 

• These shifts are important to note.​

Tone and Shift

• ​Poet is the author of the poem.

• The Speaker of the poem is also the "Narrator." In poetry, we refer the narrator as the Speaker, and it can be 1st or 3rd person

Point of View in Poetry

Repeating words, lines, or phrases; it is usually to stress the importance or to emphasize an image or message.

Repetition

Rhyme is the repetition of syllables or specific sounds.
A Rhyme Scheme is the pattern of rhyme at the end of each line or stanza, it is repeating syllables or specific sounds.
