What do you think this image had to do with the French & Indian War?

Woodcut by Benjamin Franklin, 1754

14

This illustration was originally published by Benjamin Franklin in the Pennsylvania Gazette in 1754. Franklin wanted to encourage the colonies to unite together against the French and their Indian allies. His slogan of “Join or Die” indicates that he believed the colonies would not survive separately. Their only hope was to join together with the British in the fight to protect the borders of the Colonies in the French and Indian War. Each segment of the snake represents a colony or group of colonies. For example, S.C. stands for South Carolina, N.E. stands for the New England Colonies, and so on.

  • Native American Disruption:

The war significantly impacted Native American tribes, as their alliances with the French were disrupted and their land was further encroached upon.
