THE SOLAR SYSTEM
13
The solar system is consists of our star, the Sun, and everything bound to it by gravity – the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune; dwarf planets such as Pluto; dozens of moons; and millions of asteroids, comets, and meteoroids.
Solar System
14
-The SUN is the center of the solar system.
-All the objects in the solar system orbits the sun.
Solar System
15
Nearest to the sun are the four fairly small rocky planets known as the INNER planets. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars)
On the far side of the asteroid belt are four gas giants, know as the OUTER planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune
Some text here about the topic of discussion.
Planet's Order
16
Characteristics:
1. Small and rocky
2. It has a solid surface
3. Low mass and high density
4. Close to the sun
5. No rings and few moons (if any)
The Inner Planets
17
Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun.
It is a small planet, a little bigger than Earth’s moon.
Mercury is covered with thousands of dents called craters.
Fastest revolving planet
MERCURY
18
ØNamed after the Roman Goddess of Love and beauty.
ØShines very brightly and often times called the “morning and evening star”
ØSecond planet from the Sun and called the Earth’s Twin.
ØIs the hottest planet in the solar system.
ØIt rotates backward or clockwise direction.
ØA rocky planet.
VENUS
19
ØOur home and the third planet in the solar system.
ØLargest and densest among the inner planets.
ØThe only rocky planet to sustain life. It has an atmosphere.
ØThe inner planet with one (1) moon
EARTH
20
ØA satellite is an object that orbits another object in space.
ØJust as planets revolve around the Sun because of gravity, moons revolve around planets.
ØEarth’s Moon is named Cynthia.
EARTH'S MOON
21
ØThe fourth in the solar system and named after the Roman God of War
ØKnown as the “red planet”
ØIt has two (2) moons
which is believed to be asteroids
ØIt has huge volcano known as Olympus Mons
ØIt is cold in Mars
MARS
22
The four planets closest to the sun are known as the inner planets. Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars
Inner Planets are also called Terrestrial Planets because they are solid, dense and are made up of rocks
The Inner
Planets
23
The outer planets are gas giants Jupiter and Saturn and ice giants Uranus and Neptune.
Beyond Neptune, a newer class of smaller worlds called dwarf planets reign, including longtime favorite Pluto. Thousands more planets have been discovered beyond our solar system.
OUTER PLANETS
24
ØKnown as the “king of the planets”
ØIts most prominent feature is the “Great Red Spot.”
ØHas 16 moons, 4 of which are known as the “Galilean satellites.”.
JUPITER
25
ØThe second largest gas planet.
ØHas more than 31 moons and the largest is Titan
SATURN
26
ØUranus rotates in the opposite direction as most other planets. And unlike any other planet, Uranus rotates on its side.
ØHas 13 rings and 27 known satellites/moons.
URANUS
27
ØThe planet farthest from the sun.
ØKnown as the “twin planet” of Uranus
It has 8 known moons.
NEPTUNE
28
The four planets farthest from the sun are known as the outer planets. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
Inner Planets are also called Jovian Planets because they are made up of gas.

39
Inner Planets revolve around the sun faster than the Outer Planets.
Outer Planets rotate on their axes faster than the Inner Planets.
40
41
qPlanets except Venus and Uranus rotate on their axis in counter-clockwise direction or from WEST to EAST known as prograde motion.
qVenus and Uranus rotate in a clockwise direction or from EAST to WEST known as retrograde motion.
