You are required to review the information in the presentation and then submit a quiz demonstrating your understanding of dissection safety before you will be permitted to take part in the in-class dissection of the sheep brain.

Dissection Safety

  1. Always read the ENTIRE lab before beginning.

  2. Do not engage in horseplay! Common sense should rule here when working with sharp instruments.

  3. Do not eat or drink in a lab where a dissection is occurring. This includes chewing gum.

  1. Do not lick or eat the specimen being dissected.

  2. Never dissect when holding the specimen in your hand.

    1. The specimen should be on the tray, which should be on your table, at all times.

  3. When applicable, wear safety goggles, gloves, and a lab apron.

  1. Point sharp objects away from yourself and others.

  2. The best way to transport a scalpel is on the tray. Do not walk around with it in your hand.

  1. Do not use excess force when working with a sharp instrument such as a scalpel, as this can result in snapping the blade or damaging your specimen.

  2. If you get cut, you should tell your teacher IMMEDIATELY!

  1. If you require a new blade due to breakage, please ask your teacher.

  2. Do not use any of the dissection equipment on your own body.

  3. Follow all of your teacher's instructions.
