Day vs. Night

  • The Earth rotates on its axis as it revolves around the Sun.

  •  It takes approximately 24 hours, a day, for a complete rotation to occur.

  • This counterclockwise motion occurs from west to east, causing the Sun to appear to rise in the east and set in the west.

One Year

  • While the Earth rotates on its axis, it is also revolving around the Sun.

  •  It takes 365 ¼ days, a year, for this motion/orbit to occur.

  • The Earth revolves around the Sun in an elliptical orbit.

VIDEO TIME

Let's (Re)Watch this Crash Course Video on the Earth's Rotation and Revolution now that we have a little more understanding of what is happening on our planet.

9

Fill in the Blank

What looks to us to be the motion of the Sun in the sky, is really caused by the motion of the _________?

10

VIDEO TIME

We are going to watch a video to help us further understand why we have the four different seasons.

Slide image

11

Wait, what?

A common misconception many people have is that the seasons are caused by the distance of the Earth from the Sun. THIS IS NOT TRUE. Because Earth's orbit around the Sun is slightly elliptical, Earth is actually slightly closer to the Sun in the winter than it is in the summer for us in the Northern Hemisphere.
