Specific Heat Capacity Part II
Communicate to explain the applications of specific heat capacity in daily life, material engineering and natural phenomena.

2
REMEMBER THIS!!!!
Material/object which has high specific heat capacity will heat up slowly. Therefore, there will be small change in temperature.
Meanwhile, material/object with low specific heat capacity will heat up easily. Therefore, there will be large change in temperature.
3
Also this...
If the object has high specific capacity, hot object will cooling down slowly. Because it need to release high amount of heat.
Meanwhile, when the object has low specific heat capacity, hot object wil cooling down easily.
4
Selection building materials of traditional houses in various climate zones
Wood has a high specific heat capacity and gets hot slowly. In warm weather regions, traditional houses are built from wood which functions as an insulator of heat from the scorching sun.
5
Selection building materials of traditional houses in various climate zones
In cold weather regions, traditional houses are also built from wood. Heat from fi res lit in the wooden houses cannot flow out because wood functions as a good heat insulator.
6
Multiple Choice
Wood has a high specific heat capacity. Because of that.....
It gets hot slowly
It gets hot easily
It get hot faster
7
Cooking utensils
Woks are made of metal with low specifi c heat capacity. As such, food can be fried at high temperature in a short time. Clay pots on the other hand are made of clay which has a high specific heat capacity. As such, food can stay hot for a long time.
8
Multiple Choice
The diagram shows a set of cooking utensils. The handle of the cooking utensil is made from insulator. Therefore, the specific heat capacity for those material should have
high heat capacity
low heat capacity
9
Multiple Choice
The choice of the handle of cooking utensil should be_______therefore it will____________.
high specific heat capacity - heat up easily
high specific heat capacity - heat up slowly
low specific heat capacity - heat up easily
low specific heat capacity - heat up easily
10
Multiple Choice
The base of metal work should has __(a)__therefore it will____(b)____
a. high specific heat capacity
b. heat up slowly
a. high specific heat capacity
b. heat up easily
a. low specific heat capacity
b. heat up slowly
a. low specific heat capacity
b. heat up easily.
11
Car radiator system
Water has a high specific heat capacity and is used as a cooling agent.
Water will flow through the engine block to absorb heat produced.
Hot water flows to the radiator.
Heat in the hot water can be released quickly through cooling fins.
12
Multiple Choice
Which part in car radiator is use to circulates the water through jacket to cool the cylinders?
Fan
Pump
Fin
Radiator
13
Multiple Choice
The shape of the fin is made like that because of
heat in the hot water can be released quickly through cooling fins.
water can be released quickly and avoid rusting.
high withstand from the effect of air resistance
14
Outer layer of space capsule
Space capsule on its journey back to Earth encounters air resistance when entering the atmosphere. This friction increases the temperature and causes the space capsule to burn. Therefore, the outer layer of a space capsule is made from substance with a high specific heat capacity and melting point.
15
Sea breeze
Land has a lower specific heat capacity than the sea.
Therefore, temperature on land rises more quickly than temperature in the sea during daytime.
Th e air on land becomes hot and rises upwards.
Cold air from the sea moves towards land as sea breeze.
16
Land breeze
Sea has a higher specific heat capacity than land.
So, temperature in the sea drops more slowly than temperature on land at night.
Hot air above the sea rises upwards.
Cold air above the land moves towards the sea as land breeze.
17
Multiple Choice
The phenomenon show in the diagram is
Land breeze
Sea breeze
18
Multiple Choice
The phenomenon of land breeze and sea breeze is happen due to the
different specific heat capacity of land and sea
same of specific heat capacity of land and sea
19
Multiple Choice
Hot air will rise upward because of
low density
high density
20
Multiple Choice
During the day, the land and sea absorb heat from the Sun. The specific heat capacity of the land is ____ , so it will heat up _________ . Thus, the land is ______ than the sea.
lower // faster // hotter
higher // faster // hotter
lower // slower // colder
higher // faster // colder
