Non-Calculator Method using proportion tables

A lot of people shy away from percentages but on the non-calculator paper you are only asked about multiples of 10 or quarters.

Percentages

10 percent of a number can be found by simply dividing by 10.

10% of 500 is shown on the right.

​100% = 500
10% = 50

Finding 10%

20 percent of a number is similar, but since two 10%'s make 20% we multiply that answer by two (shown right).

So 20% of 500 is 100

Finding 20%

30 percent of a number is similar, but since three 10%'s make 30% we multiply that answer by three (shown right).

So 30% of 500 is 150

By quarters I mean 50%, 25% and 75%.

You can use the table on the right to do this.

I have worked out 25% of 140 which is 35.

Finding quarters

75% is not much harder, just simply add 50% and 25% together.

So 75% of 140 is 105.
