Structure and Function - practice stimulus

Practice stimulus - directions
Treat this practice stimulus as if it were a test—no notes, no outside help, and give your best effort. This is your chance to see what you truly understand and what you still need to work on. Read through the explanations after the questions to be sure to understand them.
The more seriously you take this now, the more prepared you'll be when it counts!
3
Practice stimulus
An experiment is conducted to see the effect of exercise on the heart rate and breathing rate of a test subject. The test subject's resting heart and breathing rate were recorded and then the subject began exercising by doing jumping jacks.
At one minute intervals, the subject would stop exercising just long enough for their heart and breathing rates to be measured and then would start again. After the 4th minute of exercise, the rates were again measured and the subject stopped exercising. The rates were then recorded one and five minutes after the subject stopped exercising.
4
Practice stimulus
The data from the experiment is shown in the table below:

Multiple Choice
An appropriate label for the X axis on the graph would be…
Time spent exercising (minutes)
Overall time in experiment (mins)
Percent change over resting value
Number of times heart and breathing rate were measured
7
Fill in the Blanks

Multiple Choice
Review the percent change data during the four minutes of exercise. Did one of the measurements change more than the other in terms of percent change?
Heart rate changed more as it went from 73 to 130, while breathing rate went from 13 to 34. So heart rate increased by 57, while breathing rate only increased by 21.
Breathing rate changed more over the four minutes of exercise because it ended with an 8% change and heart rate ended with only a -3% change.
Both rates had a very similar percent change during the four minutes of exercise since they both increased and then decreased.
Breathing rate changed more as it increased 162% over the resting value, while heart rate only increased 78% over the resting value.
9
Multiple Choice
What type of feedback is used in the exerciser’s body during the lab?
Positive feedback, since the body speeds up the heart rate during exercise.
Negative feedback, since the heart rate has a -3% change at the end of the lab.
Negative feedback, since the heart rate increase helps raise the oxygen level.
Positive feedback, since the heart rate speeds up to help the body during exercise.

Poll
Do you think you can explain positive and negative feedback without looking at notes?
(this question is not graded)
Yes, I have a good understanding of those.
Maybe, some scenarios are difficult for me to tell whether they're + or - feedback.
Not really. I need to review those and do more examples.
11
Open Ended
Which two body systems were interacting to produce the percent change data in this lab? Explain how these two systems were interacting during the lab. Mention specific percent change data points in your response.
12
Open Ended
Explain how the muscles depend on the increase in heart rate during exercise, i.e., WHY does the blood need to circulate faster to the muscles during exercise?
13
Open Ended
What part of this unit do you feel most confident about? Why that one?
