Changes in Rural Communities
Technology has helped rural communities, or areas in the country to change over the past 100 years. Farming is still hard work, just as it was 100 years ago. However, 100 years ago most of the work done on farms was by hand. Horses, mules, and oxen were used to help farmers pull plows to break up the ground. They also puled wagons. Farmers could only farm a few acres with this method. Ranchers, or people who raise livestock, only raised enough to feed their own family.

Today, farmers and ranchers use all types of equipment to help them. Tractors have taken the place of horses. Tractors can pull much larger plows and work much faster than animals. Because of this, farmers can farm thousands of acres. They can plant their crops much faster and harvest them using combines. Farmers today are responsible for feeding people all over the world. Ranchers can now raise hundreds of animals as well. People everywhere can enjoy meat, milk, eggs, and other products that are made from these farm animals.
