Changes in Urban Communities
Urban communities, or cities with a large population, have changed greatly in the past 100 years. Urban areas grew with people moving there to work. These people needed places to live so more buildings were built for housing. Buildings grew taller because more people could live and work in taller buildings. Really tall buildings are called skyscrapers. Most people live in apartments or houses that are attached to one another.

Transportation 100 years ago in cities was changing quickly. People usually walked, but cars were becoming popular. With more cars on the road, traffic quickly became a problem. Traffic signals and traffic signs had to be installed. Today, other forms of transportation are used. Some cities have subways which allow people to travel underground. People also ride on buses and trains throughout the cities. Many people in large cities don't even own cars. They use public transportation and use cabs or other ride-share services. Better transportation has allowed people to work further from their homes. People are not limited to walking to their jobs.
