When you go further south, it gets really hot, and there’s a giant desert called the Sahara. This desert is super, super big and covers most of the country! It’s also one of the hottest places on Earth. There’s a writer named Assia Djebar who loves her country and describes it as “a dream of sand” because of all the sandy places there. Isn’t that cool?

Most people in Algeria are Arab, but many of them are also descendants of the ancient Amazigh people. A long time ago, Arab groups came and mixed with the local people, bringing new languages and religions. Today, about one in five people in Algeria say they are Amazigh. The biggest group is called the Kabyle, and they live to the east of the capital city, Algiers. There are also other groups, like the Shawia who live in the Aurès Mountains, the Mʾzabites from the 9th century, and the Tuareg nomads who live in the Sahara desert. Many people from Europe who lived in Algeria during its colonial time have gone back to their countries.
