Algeria is the biggest country in North Africa where many people practice the Muslim religion. Most of the people live near the ocean, which is a nice place.

Most people in Algeria are Arab, but many of them are also descendants of the ancient Amazigh people. A long time ago, Arab groups came and mixed with the local people, bringing new languages and religions. Today, about one in five people in Algeria say they are Amazigh. The biggest group is called the Kabyle, and they live to the east of the capital city, Algiers. There are also other groups, like the Shawia who live in the Aurès Mountains, the Mʾzabites from the 9th century, and the Tuareg nomads who live in the Sahara desert. Many people from Europe who lived in Algeria during its colonial time have gone back to their countries.
