Systems software refers to computer programs that are designed to manage or control the computer's hardware while the user completes tasks using other programs known as applications software. There are two main categories of systems software:

• operating systems

• utility programs

If you think of a computer as being put together in layers, it is easy to see where these two types of systems software are used.

Systems software provides an important layer between the user and the digital device. It acts as an interface between the hardware and the user applications.

When using digital devices such as computers, mobile phones, tablets, and gaming consoles, it is the operating system part of the systems software that users mainly interact with.

However, they can also call an additional group of systems software programs called utility programs to help to ensure that digital devices function smoothly.
