• Based on the Fugitive Slave Law…Hamlet in chains image, How did people in the North respond to the Fugitive Slave Law? (Many people in the North were upset by the law because it forced them to help capture runaway slaves. Some Northerns resisted the law and continued to help runaway slaves.)

• Based on Solomon Northup's first-hand account, what were the working conditions like on the Louisiana cotton plantation? (Enslaved people worked long hours in the hot sun, often from sunrise to sunset, and were given very little food with extremely harsh conditions.)
