Essential Question: What is the function of skeletal muscles in the muscular system?

Background:

All muscles are made of thousands of tiny elastic fibers, similar to rubber bands. The human body consists of over 600 muscles. These muscles work together with other systems to pump blood, move food, and move you! You even need your muscles to use your phone!

Some muscles don’t work together as well as others and form pairs called antagonistic muscles. These are pairs of muscles that oppose one another; when one flexes, the other retracts, and vice versa. Some muscles are controlled voluntarily, while others, like those in the heart or stomach, move involuntarily or without conscious control.

Question image

How do pairs of skeletal muscles work together?

1

One muscle in the pair pulls on a bone, while the second muscle pulls on the first muscle.

2

While one muscle in the pair contracts, the other returns to its original length.

3

Both muscles extend at the same time.

4

One contracts and the other stretches.
