Numerical Expressions

Vocabulary

Many words mean the same thing, but similar words can mean different things. Words that you will see often in this unit will be:
SUM: the result of adding VARIABLE: a letter to represent an unknown variable
DIFFERENCE: the result of subtracting INTEGER: a whole number, either negative or positive, and zero
PRODUCT: the result of multiplying RATIONAL NUMBER: a number that can be written as a fraction
QUOTIENT: the result of dividing COEFFICIENT: the number in multiple by a variable, always in front.
SQUARED: the result of multiplying the same number twice BASE: the factor being that is multiplying itself within an exponent
CUBED: the result of multiplying the same number 3 times. EXPONENT: the number on the top right corner, the many times to multiply
