Lieutenant Death is hiding in a tree in order to spy on Rosa, but he falls down.

Rosa heals Lieutenant Death.

Lieutenant Death sneaks away to go tell the Spanish soldiers where Rosa is hiding.

Section 3: Pages 62-66

Here, the reader gives an emotional reaction. It says, "I cannot believe that the enslaved people’s former owners have changed, yet Spanish forces are trying to keep slavery in Cuba." This shows that the reader is frustrated with the situation the Cubans are facing.

Rosa says that many of their patients go back out to fight after she heals them. That must mean they are determined to fight for their freedom.

Here, the reader underlines repeated phrases and notes an important topic: fact versus fiction.

At the beginning of the book, Rosa said that people think she is a witch even though she is just a girl who has learned about medicine. This is the same problem she talks about here.

She says that she is a nurse and a woman, not a sorceress, magician, nor witch. The people at her hospitals know she is a trained healer, but people on the outside, like the Spanish soldiers and spies still think there is something suspicious, magical, or dangerous about her.

Writing: Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers

Learners can:

  • identify misplaced modifiers

12

media

Misplaced modifiers are descriptive words that are not next to the words they should describe. This creates confusion

Misplaced Modifiers

13

media

Another kind of modifier error is called a dangling modifier. It is dangling, or hanging off the end, because the modifier does not connect to any other information in the sentence

Dangling Modifiers

14

Walking down the street, the bicyclists passed the pedestrian.

2

The patient was referred to the doctor with a broken arm.
