A preposition relates a noun or a
pronoun that follows it to another word
in the sentence. In the sentence The book
is on the table, the preposition on relates
the noun table to another word in the
sentence, book

​A prepositional phrase begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun—called the object of the preposition. In the prepositional phrase on the table, the preposition is on, and the object of the preposition is table. This chart shows a number of commonly used prepositions
