The Maze Runner's theme is the search for lost memories and identity. In the book it says, "When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his name. He's surrounded by strangers - boys whose memories are also gone. This shows the theme of The Maze Runner is the search for lost memories and identity.

First, In The Giver Jonas' experiences develop a theme over the course of the Giver by showing in the book that following the rules without understanding the past and purpose can lead people to losing their humanity.
Next, Jonas' community follows the rules and rituals without question, they lose any sense of what makes them or anything else unique and different from others. The book says, "He looked down at himself at the colorless fabric of his clothing. But it's all the same, always." This shows that when they do things without question they lose sense of what makes them human. Some might say, that when they don't follow the rules it becomes unorganized.

Then, people who take actions without thinking about why they are taking them may make harmful decisions. In the book it says, "As he continued to watch, the new child, no longer crying, moved his arms and legs in a jerking motion. Then he went limp. His head fell to the side, his eyes half open. Then he was still." This shows that when people take actions without thinking about why they are taking them they may make harmful decisions.
To conclude, Jonas' experiences develop a theme over the course of The Giver by showing in the book that following the rules without understanding the past and purpose can lead to losing their humanity.
