Today's Agenda

Quizizz

3

Vocab of the Day

Conduction

heat transfer between objects that are touching

4

Vocab of the Day

Convection currents

when heating a liquid or gas, a circular motion is created from hotter fluids

5

Vocab of the Day

insulator

a material that does not allow heat or electricity to pass through easily

6

Vocab of the Day

conductor

a material that allows heat and/or electricity to pass through easily. Metals are usually the best conductors

7

Vocab of the Day

thermal equilibrium

the point at which two objects are touching reach the same temperature

8

 Types of Energy Notes

  • Energy - the ability to do work

  • Kinetic energy - the energy of motion

  • Thermal energy - the total kinetic energy due to the motion of the atoms in a substance

  • Electrical Energy Transfer - When an electrical source (ex. battery or generator) is connected in a complete circuit to an electrical device

  • Electromagnetic Waves - can transmit energy through matter or empty space

  • Mechanical Energy Transfer - when a warm object is in contact with a cooler object

  • Thermal energy is transferred through a material by the collision of atoms within the material

  • Thermal energy is always transferred from warmer to cooler objects until thermal equilibrium is reached

9

 Conductors & Insulators

  • Conductor - a material that transfers thermal or electrical energy very well

  • Insulators do not let heat and electricity pass easily through them

  • Thermal expansion - an increase in the size of a substance in response to an increase in the temperature of the substance

10

 Thermal Expansion Article

11

Open Ended

  1. As you read, keep a tally of how many times the author uses the word “thermal expansion”. (expand, expanding, expanded)

12

Open Ended

  1. What was the main idea of the article?

13

Open Ended

  1. Why do bridges have expansion joints?

14

Open Ended

  1. What is a major issue concerning expansion joints and why is it causing the bridges to “wreck?”

15

 Heat Transfer Notes

  • CONDUCTION - heat transferred when two objects touch. (works best in solids)

  • CONVECTION - heat transferred by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas. (fluids)

  • A fluid is a liquid or gas that has the ability to flow

  • The upward movement of warm air and downward movement of cool air forms convection currents

  • RADIATION - heat transferred through matter or empty space (no direct contact) by electromagnetic waves
