Energy From The Sun

• All interactions among Earth’s spheres need energy to happen.

• Almost all of this energy comes from the sun.

• Without the sun, there would be no weather at all.

What is the atmosphere made of?

• Gases: Nitrogen (about 78%) and oxygen (about 21%) make up most of the “air” or atmosphere.

• Aerosols: very tiny solid and liquid particles in the atmosphere. (For example: ash, dust, sea salt, and pollen)

The sky can look hazy or smoky if there are enough particles (aerosols) in the air. Remember when the air was hazy from the fires?

How do scientists describe the weather?

• Scientists measure air temperature, air pressure, wind, precipitation, and atmospheric humidity.

• They use this information to predict the weather.

• Scientists who study the weather are called meteorologists.
