What is a Natural
Resource?
A natural resource is
something that is found in
nature and can be used by
people. Earth’s natural
resources include light, air,
water, plants, animals, soil,
stone, minerals, and fossil
fuels. People need some
natural resources to stay
alive. They use others to
make their lives better.
4
Some of our Natural
Resources:
Metals are natural resources that
are important for creating tools
and machines. Trees are made
into timber, which is made into
wood products and pulp for
paper. Plants are used as
medicines, food, and clothing.
Rocks become building materials
in the form of asphalt and
concrete. All of these are
examples of natural resources
that have become valuable
because they are so useful.
5
Human-Made
Resources
Human-made resources
are resources created by
people from natural
resources. For example,
humans process oil to
make petroleum and then
use petroleum to make
plastic. Therefore, oil is a
natural resource, and
plastic and petroleum are
human-made resources.
6
Human-Made
Resources
A peanut butter and jelly
sandwich is composed of
several natural
resources--the wheat in the
bread, the peanuts in the
peanut butter, and the fruit
and sugar in the jelly.
7
Renewable
Resources
Renewable resources
cannot be used up, or
they can be replaced or
grow back in a
reasonable period of
time. Examples include
sunlight, water, and
trees.
8
Non-Renewable
Resources
Nonrenewable resources
cannot be replaced in a
reasonable period of time.
For example, once oil and
mineral ores have been
removed from Earth's
surface, they cannot be
replaced for millions of
years. Humans use these
resources faster than they
can be replaced.
9
Conservation
10
Conservation
We use natural resources in
our day to day lives and they
are very important for our
survival. If we are careless
when using natural resources
we can use them all up and
there will not be any available
for the generations to come.
This is why we must try to
conserve or save our natural
resources.
11
Some Ways We Can
Conserve Natural
Resources:
●Turn off lights when they are not
being used.
●Turn off the faucet when it is not
being used. Do not leave water
running.
●Recycle plastic and metal
containers.
●Try not to waste anything.
