A wheelbarrow represents a second class levers. The effort is applied at the end of the handle by the gardener. The fulcrum is at the wheel – at the opposite end of the handle. The load is carried in the wheelbarrow bucket.
Why is a wheelbarrow considered a 2nd class lever?
12
Draw
Draw an example of a second class lever

A hockey stick is a great example of a third class lever. You may want to ask students where they should place their hands when swinging at a hockey puck. Have one student demonstrate how they would swing a stick – use a meter stick or a broom. Point out that to get the most power (or work) from swinging the stick, the top hand should be stationary and the bottom hand pushes. A hockey player often pushes the puck along by moving both hands, but for long shots the top hand is stationary and acts as the fulcrum. The answer to the question for the third class levers is: “the effort is in the middle of the system.” The fulcrum for the tongs is where the two ends are attached, the effort is in the middle and the load is the serrated ends.

Activity Time!
Problem: What are the characteristics of a lever?
What you need:
bottle opener broom spoon
tongs clothespin pliers
scissors tweezers
17
What you need to do:
1. Take a look at the different objects. Use each to identify the fulcrum, load
or resistance, and the effort. Answers will be drawn on the next slide.
| LOCATION OF FULCRUM | LOCATION OF LOAD | LOCATION OF EFFORT | TYPE OF CLASS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
ex: wheelbarrow | wheel | tray/bucket | handle | 2nd class |
