Trials and Tribulations of Travel
Travel is thrilling, but getting to paradise is often an ordeal. Traffic jams make me steam, and I'm a world-class contortionist in the way I fit myself in the ever-shrinking economy seats on planes. My stress levels are already off the charts before I even arrive. And then I have to figure out my itinerary and negotiate where to eat with my family. By the time I get home, I need a vacation. In this passage, the author leaves glitzy Las Vegas for a quiet hike in the desert.
17
Surreal to Real
Tired of the din of the smoky casinos, we leave Las Vegas for a hike at Owl Creek Canyon, just 20 miles off the "Strip." It's blistering hot when we get there, so after tossing my camera and gear into my pack, I don sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. The open desert gives us views of a rocky red escarpment, and after passing stands of towering pine trees, we venture further into the cool of the canyon where we scale over truck-sized jumbles of boulders and soak in crystal clear pools.

Reading Passage 4
In this essay, the author remembers what it was like growing up in Tornado Alley.
34
In the Heart of Tornado Alley
For me and my family, the high-pitched moan of a tornado siren had been so commonplace we rarely took notice, even as the storm clouds turned day into night. Such is life in Missouri, located in the heart of a region in the United States called Tornado Alley. I was so intrigued by the wonders of weather, I'd press my nose against the window to watch the cornfield dance in the wind as the meteorologist insisted we seek shelter. But after one too many false alarms, how can we heed every warning?
