A morpheme is the smallest meaningful unit in a language that cannot be further divided. It can be a word or a part of a word that carries meaning. Morphemes are classified into two main types:
1. Free Morphemes: These can stand alone as words.
Examples include "book," "run," and "happy."
2. Bound Morphemes: These cannot stand alone and must be attached to other morphemes.
Examples include prefixes like "un-" in "unhappy" and suffixes like "-s" in "books"12.
Morphemes are essential in understanding how words are formed and how they function in a language.
