1
L.O: To identify, describe and sketch 3D shapes in different orientations.
2
Resources: Variety of 3D shapes including cuboids and cubes, an opaque bag.
Description: Put a 3D shape into the bag without learners seeing it. Feel the shape and describe it slowly out loud using its mathematical properties. Describe the number of vertices, the number of edges and the 2D shape of one of the faces. Once all the properties of the shape have been described ask learners to predict the shape in the bag. Reveal the shape. Repeat with different shapes, making sure you include a cube and a cuboid.
3
Main Activity: Drawing 3D shapes
Learning intention: To identify, describe and sketch 3D shapes in different orientations. Resources: 3D shapes (pyramids and prisms), cameras, plain paper, isometric dotty paper, interlocking cubes, pencils, rulers.
Description: Give pairs of learners a selection of 3D shapes to choose from. They should position the shape on their table in any orientation and photograph it. Ask pairs to look at their photograph and say how many faces, vertices and edges of the shape are visible in the picture. Display or project photographs of different shapes and ask learners to identify the faces, vertices and edges they can see.
4
Main Activity: Drawing 3D shapes
Give the learners isometric paper. The dots on the paper can help us to draw objects, such as cubes, in a particular way that is clear and useful. Demonstrate the following steps to draw a cube.
1 Draw a dot representing one vertex of the cube.
2 Draw lines that represent the edges of the cube that connect to that vertex.
3 Draw a single face of the cube.
4 Complete all other visible faces of the cube. Draw cubes on the isometric paper following the instructions. Learners should share their drawings with their partners and support each other to correct any errors.
5
Main Activity: Drawing 3D shapes
Differentiation :
Support less confident learners by drawing part of the model on the isometric paper for them to complete. Challenge more confident learners by asking them to make models of their own using four cubes and to draw these on the isometric paper.
6
PLENARY.
Show a cube and ask learners to describe its vertices, edges and faces.
