Ethnicity

10

Three areas that minority may face discrimination

  • Education

  • Employment

  • Housing

Reason: those who are in positions of power and authority hold prejudiced views

11

Education

  • teachers are likely to be from the majority group and may stereotype ethnic minority pupils as lazy or deviant (different)

  • minority pupils may internalise these views and are then likely not to succeed in education

  • the school may also have a curriculum that is based on the history and culture of the majority group

12

Employment

  • ethnic minorities may not be selected for interview if their name suggests they are from a minority group

  • some are not invited for an interview even if they are the best candidate (perhaps they're told that they won't fit in)

  • if given employment, they may find that they're not given opportunities to take training courses and do not get a promotion

13

Housing

  • local government has a stock of housing available for rent, ethnic minorities may find that the rules are against them, and are rarely offered housing

  • in privately owned housing there can be informal segregation when members of minorities plan to move to a new are, which make the minorities feel that they're not welcome
