Integers-Subtracting Integers

By Seth Wade and Micheal Evans Blackduck

2

How Do You Subtract Integers With The Same Sign?

When subtracting integers with the same signs, you need to use these rules to help you out.

-Determine if both of the integers are positive or negative

If positive, take the second number and subtract it by the first number.

-If both negative, then turn the subtraction and second number's interger into addtion. Then you can add onto the negative number.

Examples, -5 - (-6), the answer is obviously +1, since if you turn the subtraction and the negative into positive, it will look like this. -5 + 6. Then you can add the 6 onto -5, which equals positive 1.

How Do You Subtract Integers With Different Signs?

When subtracting integers, you need to follow these rules so you can do them properly.

-Keep the first integer, and don't do anything with that integer.

-Change the second integer depending on if it is positive or negative. If the second integer is a positive, then you turn the subtraction and the sign into deduction (subtraction) (-2 - (+5) = -7) But if the first integer is positive and the second integer is negative. Then you turn the sign and the integer into a positive

(4 - (-6) = 10).
