Simile Definition

• A simile is a figure of speech that directly compares two different things. 

•  The simile is usually in a phrase that begins with the words "as" or "like." 
  
  
  

A Simile is NOT a METAPHOR 

• A simile is different from a metaphor, which is also a comparison.

• But a metaphor does not use 'like' or 'as'

• Metaphor will have 'is' or 'was' or 'were' to compare two nouns. 

Simile Examples

• The rain pelted us like rocks. 

• The rain is being compared to rocks. This means the rain was HARD. 

• The boy ran as fast as a cheetah. 

• The boy is being compared to a cheetah.  This means he is FAST. 

Metaphor Example

• The baby is an angel.

• The baby is being compared to an angel.  This means the baby does not do anything wrong.

• The teacher was an early worm to school everyday. 

• This is comparing the teacher to an early worm.  This means the teacher gets to school early every day.
