​Mucosa: composed of non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. (important for frequent abrasion remains until the gastro-oesophageal junction) LAMINA PROPRIA, MUSCUILARIS MUCOSAE. // secretes mucus which acts as a protective layer trapping micro-organisms and chemical barrier.

​Submucosa: composed of dense irregular connective tissue. // supplies blood vessels, lymph and nerves to the tract

​Oesophogal glands: compound tubuloalveolar (tubuloacinar) exocrine glands // lubricates the oesophogeal lumen

​Muscularis propria: skeletal muscle (important for swallowing) - then skeletal and smooth muscle - then smooth muscle further down the oesophagus

​Adventita: connective tissue // anchors the oesphagus in place within the thorax

​Mucosa: simple columnar epithelium villi increase surface area

​Glands: compound tubuloacinar glands that produce digestive enzymes

​Parietal cells: lighter more pink staining produce HCL also secrete intrinsic factor

​Chief cells: darker more purple staining, produce pepsinogen

​Villi: projections larger SA

​Submucosa: neurovasculature

​Muscularis externa:three directions to allow for mechanical digestion
