We learned about Earth's four spheres. What are the names of each of the spheres?

3

Multiple Choice

One of Earth's spheres is the hydrosphere. The hydrosphere ____.

1

is the parts of Earth in which organisms are able to live, along with all of Earth’s living things.

2

is all of the water on Earth including ice, liquid water in the ocean, rivers, and lakes, and water vapor.

3

is all of the rock, sand, and soil on Earth including at Earth’s surface and deep underground.

4

is the envelope of air that surrounds the solid Earth and includes gases and aerosols.

4

Multiple Choice

Another of Earth's spheres is the biosphere. The biosphere ____.

1

is the parts of Earth in which organisms are able to live, along with all of Earth’s living things.

2

is all of the water on Earth including ice, liquid water in the ocean, rivers, and lakes, and water vapor.

3

is all of the rock, sand, and soil on Earth including at Earth’s surface and deep underground.

4

is the envelope of air that surrounds the solid Earth and includes gases and aerosols.

5

Multiple Choice

The geosphere ____.

1

is the parts of Earth in which organisms are able to live, along with all of Earth’s living things.

2

is all of the water on Earth including ice, liquid water in the ocean, rivers, and lakes, and water vapor.

3

is all of the rock, sand, and soil on Earth including at Earth’s surface and deep underground.

4

is the envelope of air that surrounds the solid Earth and includes gases and aerosols.

6

Multiple Choice

Finally, the atmosphere ____.

1

is the parts of Earth in which organisms are able to live, along with all of Earth’s living things.

2

is all of the water on Earth including ice, liquid water in the ocean, rivers, and lakes, and water vapor.

3

is all of the rock, sand, and soil on Earth including at Earth’s surface and deep underground.

4

is the envelope of air that surrounds the solid Earth and includes gases and aerosols.

7

The Atmosphere

  • is the envelope of air that surrounds the Earth

  • is made up of a layer of mixed invisible gases, tiny solid particles such as ash, and water droplets.

Weather is

the condition of the atmosphere and its phenomena in a certain place at a specific time.

9

Open Ended

Weather shows the interactions between Earth's spheres. What are some of the interactions between Earth’s spheres that you notice? (Think: How does water affect living things? How does the atmosphere affect the land?) Write one sentence.

10

Energy From The Sun

  • All interactions among Earth’s spheres need energy to happen.

  • Almost all of this energy comes from the sun.

  • Without the sun, there would be no weather at all.

11

What is the atmosphere made of?

  • Gases: Nitrogen (about 78%) and oxygen (about 21%) make up most of the “air” or atmosphere.

  • Aerosols: very tiny solid and liquid particles in the atmosphere. (For example: ash, dust, sea salt, and pollen)

12

The sky can look hazy or smoky if there are enough particles (aerosols) in the air. Remember when the air was hazy from the fires?

How do scientists describe the weather?

  • Scientists measure air temperature, air pressure, wind, precipitation, and atmospheric humidity.

  • They use this information to predict the weather.

  • Scientists who study the weather are called meteorologists.
