Pi Day Fun

Let's Celebrate!

media

2

What is Pi Day?

  • A holiday made up to make you think more about math?

  • An international holiday celebrated on 3/14 (in the US) because it's like 3.14

  • A celebration of the power of a constant representing the circumference of a circle to its diameter?

  • A reason to celebrate pie?

  • All of these :)

3

What IS pi anyway?

Anciently, mathematicians determined that there was a relationship between the diameter of a circle and its circumference. The distance around a circle was a tad more than 3 times as long as the diameter. π is a constant that is used in formulas related to circles.

  • Circular object(s) like plates, cans, rolls of tape, coin or bottle cap

  • String

  • Ruler

  • Scissors (optional)

  • Calculator

  • Paper and pencil

media

26

Cutting Pi Procedures

  • Measure the diameter of each object and record it

  • Wrap the string around the outside of the circle, measure it and record it.

  • Divide the circumference by the diameter for each pair

  • Share your value with the group.
