What is it?​

It is a word, syllable, or line having or ending with an identical or corresponding sound to another word, syllable or line.

​Why do we use Rhyming?

Used as Mnemonic devices to help memorize or learn facts.

Used to entertain and engage young readers like in nursery rhymes

​Used in poetry, literature and music to create rhythm, visual harmony or artistic effect.

​TYPES OF RHYMES

• ​Perfect Rhyme

• ​Syllabic Rhyme

• ​Slant Rhyme or Assonance

• ​Consonance Rhymes

• ​Head Rhymes or Alliteration

• ​Imperfect Rhyme

​​Perfect Rhyme

​= Two words have the same sounds in every syllable.

​

This is most common in words with fewer syllables, as it is easier to achieve.

​

Examples include “happy” and “sappy,” “host” and “most,” “fleece” and “geese.”

Syllabic Rhyme

​= The last syllables have similar sounds, but not necessarily the same stressed vowel

​

Examples are “bitter” and “batter.”

Slant Rhyme or Assonance

​= Words with the same vowel sounds

​

Examples include “tall” and “mall,” care” and “bare.”

Consonance Rhyme

​= Words in which the consonants are similarly sounding.

Examples include “shin” and “sheen,” “stop” and “stoop.”

Head Rhyme or Alliteration

​= Are similar to consonance in that they rely on similarly sounding first letters.

Examples include “slippery” and “slope,” “crown” and “crow.”

​​Imperfect Rhyme

​= An unstressed syllable in one word rhymes with a stressed syllable in another.

​

Examples include “sing” and “hoping,” “tan” and “curtain.”
