Reading Section

  • The reading section is a SCAVENGER HUNT. All of the information you need is right on the page. You do not need to guess, come up with an opinion, or perform any literary analysis.

  • Correct answers are always RESTATED or DEMONSTRATED in the text.

  • DETAILS are important. The difference between a right and wrong answer could be a single word.

  • There is always ONE exactly right answer. There aren't "good," "better," and "best" choices. Only right and wrong.​

Conquering the Reading Section

  1. ALWAYS read the brief passage introduction. NEVER SKIP!

  2. Look through the questions and find any that have a citation (ex. "On line 14..." "In paragraph 2...")

  3. NOW skim the text.

  4. Find 3 WRONG answers.

  5. Confirm that the remaining answer is correct. ​

Nouns - people, places, things

Any object you can touch or point to is a noun.

Some nouns represent IDEAS, like "happiness." This type of noun is a noun you can't point at, but you can recognize it by the endings:

-ism -ology​

-ness -hood

Can be SINGULAR or PLURAL by adding:

-s

-es​

Verbs are ACTIONS.

A verb is something you can DO.

Can also be singular or plural.

Hack: If you want to test a word to see if it is a verb, use the word "cannot" in front of it.

Example: I cannot RUN. I cannot DO that. He cannot MAKE a sports car.​

Tricky Grammar Questions

If the GRAMMAR is wrong, the ANSWER is wrong!

You will never have a correct answer where the grammar is wrong. Use that to help you eliminate answer choices. ​
