For many years, Spain and France fought for control of what is now Texas. The primary motivations for the exploration and colonization of Texas were the three Gs: Gold, God, and Glory. Many explorers hoped to find vast quantities of gold, silver, and other precious metals. Some explorers simply wished to gain fame across the globe for their courageous actions and daring expeditions. Others wanted to spread their religious beliefs throughout the Americas.

Spain's Goal
Spain’s primary goal for Texas was to spread its religion. The Spanish wanted to share their beliefs with the indigenous population of the area. Many Spanish explorers often brought missionaries with them on their expeditions. Missionaries were religious figures who wanted to convert others to their religion. These missionaries belonged to one of two Catholic religious orders: the Franciscans and the Jesuits.

Presidios
After the first missions were built, the Spanish began to build another type of settlement known as a presidio. A presidio is a military fort used for protection. Presidios were often constructed near missions so soldiers could protect the missionaries, priests, and settlers. Presidios in each area of Texas had a specific purpose. Presidios in East Texas protected settlements from French attacks. Presidios along the coast prevented foreign invasions from landing and raiding coastal settlements. Presidios constructed farther inland were meant to defend settlements against hostile American Indian tribes. The Spanish constructed eight presidios in Texas from 1716 to 1789.
