writing the piece.

Rhetoric
Rhetoric is language meant to persuade an audience.
We see it used in conversations, advertisements, politics and on social media.... just to name a few places.

Rhetorical Triangle

Juxtaposition
When you juxtapose things, you place them side by side. This makes the things seem related — whether they are or not. Here's an example:

Zeugma/Antithesis
Zeugma--- applies the same word to two ideas to show an unexpected relationship between them
Antithesis--- words a sentence in a way that shows how two ideas are directly opposed.

The big idea the writer wants to leave you with.

Bias-
prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair.

An appeal to ethics/credibility/trust.
Ethos
An appeal to logic/reason.
Logos

Ethos is an appeal to CREDIBILITY. It's a technique for building trust in the speaker (not the audience).

Pathos appeals to the emotions of an audience.
Humans are primarily EMOTIONAL. We feel before we think.
Pathos is perhaps the easiest appeal to make.
