Day 1 - Electrically Charged Objects
SC.5.P.10.3 Investigate and explain that an electrically charged object can attract an uncharged object and can either attract or repel another charged object without any contact between the objects.

Multiple Choice
After emptying a load of laundry from the dryer, a student observes that all of the socks are sticking to other pieces of clothes. When he pulls them apart, he hears a crackling sound, and sometimes feels tiny shocks where he touches the clothes. Which of these ideas is MOST LIKELY the cause for the socks sticking to the other clothes?
magnetism
gravity
static
glue

Electrically Charged Objects
I. Electrical energy and magnetic force are connected.
Magnets have poles that attract and repel.
Electrical energy has a positive or a negative charge.
When objects become electrically charged, they can attract or repel other objects, in the same way that magnets can attract or repel other magnetic objects.

Multiple Choice
Magnets have poles __________________.
that attract
that repel
that attract and repel
that stand straight up

When objects become _______________, they can attract or repel other objects
negatively charged

larger
electrically charged

II. An attraction is a pull.
When two objects are attracted, they are pulled together.
A magnet and an iron nail are magnetically attracted: they will be pulled together.
Objects that are electrically charged can attract other objects.
Have you ever taken something out of the dryer, and another piece of clothing stuck to it? For example, often socks will stick to other pieces of clothing. The socks have become electrically charged when in the dryer, and will stick to other pieces of clothing. This is called electrostatic charge. In laundry, we call it static cling: the static (electrostatic) charge of the sock causes it to cling (be attracted to) something else.

Multiple Choice
An attraction is _______________.
circuit
magnet
a push
a pull
8
Multiple Choice
Objects that are electrically charged can __________ other objects.
charge
attract
get rid of
find

You can see the same static cling when you rub an inflated balloon in your hair. The balloon becomes charged because of the rubbing (same way the sock became charged in the dryer, rubbing against all the other clothes.) After you rub a balloon in your hair, it will stick to your hair, the wall, other objects... The electrical charge of the balloon causes it to be attracted to other objects.

Multiple Choice
How can it be explained that someone's hair can stick to a balloon?
There is electricity.
There is too much dust in the air.
The person needs to wash his hair.

In this video, notice that the stream of water is bending away from the pvc pipe. This is evidence that the water is being repelled, or pushed away from the pipe. The pipe and the water both have electrical charges, and just like two magnets, these two charged objects are repelled.
