  • What makes "classic" texts like Beowulf still worth reading today? What makes a "Classic" a "Classic?" UNIVERSAL THEMES!

  • ​One of the key points of interest in the story is the concept of LEADERSHIP: What makes a good leader? From Hrothgar to Beowulf -- think about what makes these men worthy of honor according to the Anglo-Saxons.

Take a moment to think about what the Anglo-Saxons consider to be good qualities in their leaders. Think about the ways in which both Hrothgar, Beowulf, and the praised warriors are INDIRECTLY characterized. Create a list of these qualities.

Now, let's make some connections with those UNIVERSAL THEMES. Think of someone in our current society who, according to Anglo-Saxon ideals, would be considered a good leader. Here's an added challenge: You may not use a current or former president.

  • How does your selected, modern-day leader, exhibit the leadership qualities that the Anglo-Saxons found to be important?
