Starting to put it all together...
What makes "classic" texts like Beowulf still worth reading today? What makes a "Classic" a "Classic?" UNIVERSAL THEMES!
One of the key points of interest in the story is the concept of LEADERSHIP: What makes a good leader? From Hrothgar to Beowulf -- think about what makes these men worthy of honor according to the Anglo-Saxons.
7
Open Ended
Take a moment to think about what the Anglo-Saxons consider to be good qualities in their leaders. Think about the ways in which both Hrothgar, Beowulf, and the praised warriors are INDIRECTLY characterized. Create a list of these qualities.

Open Ended
Now, let's make some connections with those UNIVERSAL THEMES. Think of someone in our current society who, according to Anglo-Saxon ideals, would be considered a good leader. Here's an added challenge: You may not use a current or former president.
9
How does your selected, modern-day leader, exhibit the leadership qualities that the Anglo-Saxons found to be important?
As you finish reading, I want you to consider: Are good kings the same as good leaders? What about good warriors? Good heroes? In what ways to these things overlap? or NOT overlap?
10
Before I give you the assignment link - I want to talk about your final project for the story. Due Sept. 4 :)
