2

By the end of the class you will be able to answer:

What is biotechnology?

How do advances in biotechnology benefit society?

How do ethics impact the advancement of biotechnology?

In what ways does biotechnology impact our everyday lives?

How can we determine the impact of biotechnology in North Carolina?

3

What is one thing that is common between all these organisms

If you were a farmer which breed of cow would you want to raise for meat? Why

7

Older form of Biotechnology

Selective breeding (AKA artificial selection) intentional mating of organisms to produce offspring with specific traits.

Watch the video Mr. Green Genes

Do you think if this is a worthwhile/ethical use of biotechnology why or why not?

9

Genetic Engineering

11

Multiple Choice

Where are restriction enzymes used in the process on the previous slide?

1

To cut DNA at specific location in the human cell

2

to glue dna back together

3

to copy DNA

4

to delete dna

12

Reorder

Reorder the following steps of genetic modification

Cut/cleave the desired gene organism using restriction enzymes

Glue/splice the desired into a bacterial plasmid using a vector

Insert the plasmid into the cell that you want to express that trait

Allow the cell to grow and divide (Cell Cycle), then the protein (trait) will be expressed

How do advances in biotechnology benefit society? (Hint: pest resistant crops, insulin)

14

Bio-remediation

Bio-remediation means to use biological organisms to solve an environmental problem such as contaminated soil or groundwater.

15

Biofuel/Bioethanol

A non polluting fuel made from plant material that can be used in place of gasoline.  Using corn or agricultural waste to produce fuel. Bioplastic made from corn instead of petroleum.

16

Clones and Stem cells:

An organism that has exact genetic copy of the other.

Stem cells and stem cell research are also used in cloning.

Ste

Stem cells have the ability to become any cell in the body if they receive the right signals

17

DNA fingerprinting

  • There are sections of DNA that are different in each person.

  • The repeating units in these sections make DNA fingerprint.

Genome

  • A genome is the entire genetic code of an organism. The human genome project was an international research effort to determine the sequence of human genome and identify the genes that it contains. In humans, that's over 20,000 genes! The completed human sequence can now identify the location of each gene.

  • search for genes linked to different types of disease

media

20

Multiple Choice

What was the purpose of the human genome project?

1

to clone DNA

2

To sequence the entire human genome

3

to determine where cancer genes are

4

to genetically alter humans

21

Gene Therapy

Knowing which genes cause certain diseases, scientists can try to remove the defective gene, and replace it with a “working” geneith sub-header

Replace this with your body text. Duplicate this text as many times as you would like. All provided templates can be reused multiple times. Wish you a good day.

Happy teaching!

23

Bioinformatics

It is the use of technology for the acquisition, management and analysis of biological information.

Economic Impact Of Biotechnology

  • Helping farmers prosper

  • A thriving industry with more than 500 companies. 300,000 jobs created.

  • 300,000 jobs created.

  • Tax generated for state
