10

Range and Interquartile Range Formulas

Range = Maximum # - Minimum #

(Upper Extreme - Lower Extreme)

Interquartile Range (IQR) = Q3 -Q1

11

Outliers

An outlier is a number in a data set that is very different from the rest of the numbers.

It can have a MAJOR effect on the mean.

12

Example 5: Find Outliers

Find the outliers for the following data set.

{35,16,17,17,19,9}

13

How to find Outliers using 1.5 IQR rule

Step 1: IQR X 1.5

Step 2: Q1 - (IQR X 1.5)

Step 3: Q3 + (IQR X 1.5)

Any number in the data set that is below or above these numbers are outliers.

14

Multiple Choice

Use the 1.5 IQR rule to determine if there are any outliers for the following numbers:

84, 88, 72, 74, 98, 35, 94

1

Yes, 35 is an outlier.

2

Yes, 33 is an outlier.

3

Yes, 98 is an outlier.

4

There are no numbers less than 39 or greater than 124, therefore there are no outliers.

Question image
Which is NOT ture?
1
The spreads of the low temperatures for Reybold and Picktown are not the same
2

3
The median low temeratures for Reybold and Picktown are different
4
The lower extreme for Picktown is approximately 5 degrees lower than the lower extreme for Reybold

21

Example 2: Find 5 Number Summary

29

How is a Box and Whisker Plot set up?

You have 4 different section.
