Converting decimals to fractions

Remember the place value chart for decimals when you work through these slides.

Decimals --> Fractions

• To change 0.7 to a fraction: write the fraction with a denominator of 10, 100 or 1000.

•  $\frac{7}{10}$  The place value in 0.7 is the tenth place.

• Simplify the fraction if needed.

Converting decimals with whole number

• The value 3.5 has only the 0.5 that will be turned into a fraction.

• The whole number 3 will remain.

How to convert 3.5 into a mixed number

• The 3 will stay and the 0.5 will be

   $\frac{5}{10}$  which will be simplified to  $\frac{1}{2}$  

• The changed value is 3 $\frac{1}{2}$

Converting fractions to decimals

• Divide the numerator by the denominator of a fraction to change it to a decimal value

Repeating values

• When converting a fraction to a decimal, there can be a value that is not a terminating value or one that shows repeating values

•  $\frac{11}{15}$  is an example of a value that shows a repeating answer.

• Look at the picture on the right to see a better example of a repeating decimal.

• When this happens, you need  round to the repeating number and to put a bar over the repeating value
