Types of Rocks
2
There are 3 Types of Rocks!
Metamorphic
Igneous
Sedimentary
3
What are Rocks classified by??
The processes they are formed by!
4
What are they made of?
Rocks are made up of MINERALS
Minerals are made of ELEMENTS
Ex: Quartz & Calcite
5
Simple to Complex
Elements to Minerals to Rocks
6
The Rock Cycle
The rock cycle allows for rocks to change from one type of rock to another over time. For example, an igneous rock can turn into a metamorphic rock by going through certain processes and then change again to be an igneous rock.
7
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is NOT one of the 3 types of rocks?
Sedimentary
Minerals
Igneous
Metamorphic
8
Multiple Choice
How are rocks classified?
Based on how they are formed
What color they are
What they are shaped like
Where they are found
9
Igeneous Rocks
How are they formed?
Form from magma cooling and hardening.
• Characteristics:
shiny/ look like glass
porous (tiny holes)
• Examples:
Obsidian, granite, basalt, and etc
10
Metamorphic Rocks
How are they formed?
Formed from extreme heat and pressure.
• Where are they found?
• Characteristics:
Wavy layers,
may have crystals
• Examples:
Gneiss, marble, slate, and etc
11
Sedimentary Rocks
How are they formed?
Formed when sediments (tiny particles of
sand, shells, pebbles, etc. are cemented and compacted together.
• Characteristics:
Chunks May have fossils My break easily
• Examples: conglomerate, limestone, sandstone, shale, and etc
12
Multiple Choice
If I have a rock with wavy layers, what type of rock is it most likely to be?
metamorphic
igneous
sedimentary
13
Multiple Choice
Which type of rock forms from cooling and hardening?
Sedimentary
Metamorphic
Igneous
14
Multiple Choice
What type of rock forms from heat and pressure?
igneous
metamorphic
sedimentary
15
Weathering
When sediments go through the process of wearing or being worn down by long exposure to the atmosphere.
16
Erosion
When sediments of the rocks are eroded by wind, water, or other natural agents.
17
Deposition
When the sediments stop moving and are deposited in a new location.
18
Compacting
The layers are pressed together and packed down and more sediment may be added.
19
Cementation
Water may be involved to compact sediment together to form rock. Form sedimentary rocks.
20
Multiple Choice
When sediments stop moving and are deposited in a new location
erosion
weathering
deposition
21
