Comparison Statements & Multiplicative Comparison Statements

These statements from the previous slide are called comparison statements, and since this is dealing with multiplication, we can call these multiplicative comparison statements.

5

  • A DVD costs $15 and a book costs $5. Make a multiplicative comparison statements about the two objects.

  • Three books equal the cost of the DVD.

  • 5 x 3 = 15

  • 15 = 5 x 3

  • The DVD costs 3 times as much as the book.

Follow up Questions

Scarlett has 7 crayons in her pencil box. Liam has 4 times as many crayons as Scarlett.

Whose number of crayons is greater?

How do you know?

How many times as great?

Will Liam have more or fewer than 7 crayons?

What equation can we write to represent this situation?

c = 4 x 7

4 x 7 = c

3 * 9 = 27
