What are editing marks?
Editing marks, or proofreading marks, are symbols we use when editing a text by hand. Some software will insert these for you when proofreading on a computer (the STAAR does not do this for you).
These are widely accepted and mostly universal.
Why do you think it is important have a universal system like this?
3
When you need to capitalize a letter, draw 3 short lines directly under it.
Capitalize
If a letter should NOT be capitalized, draw a diagonal line across it. This shows it should be lowercase
Lowercase
If there is a spelling error, draw a single line straight through the word. Then, write the correct spelling above it.
Spelling
When a period needs to be added, place the period in the correct spot with a circle around it.
Period
4
If something needs to be deleted, draw a line with a loop through it. Do not draw an "x" for a deletion.
Delete
If you need to add a word, draw an empty A in the space it belongs. Then, write the word below it.
Add
If you need to add a comma, draw the same open A as before. Then, place a comma inside it.
Add a comma
If you need to add an apostrophe, draw a V in the space it belongs. Then, place the apostrophe inside it.
Add an apostrophe
5
When you need to add quotation marks, draw a V at the beginning and end of whatever needs them. Then, add the quotation marks in both.
Add quotation marks
When there is an extra space, or two words should be one, draw two curved lines. Make sure you have one curve above the space, and another below the space.
Close the space / combine 2 words
