What is Poetry?

• Poetry is a specific type of literature that expresses a theme or emotional experience with language and structure.

• There are several types of poetical structures and each have their own defining characteristics, but all poems share the following basic structural elements:

  • Lines, Line Breaks

  • Stanzas

  • Verse

  • Couplets

The Different Types of Poems

• Blank Verse, Free Verse

• Sonnets, Haikus, Acrostic, Limerick

• Ode, Epics, Ballad, Concrete, Narrative

• Elegy, Slam, Metaphysical
