Estimating Differences:

When estimating to the nearest thousands the first step is to round to the nearest thousands.

  • Rounding to the nearest thousands you first look at the number in the thousands column and circle the number.

  • Round it up!!!

Estimating Differences:

  • Then look at the number in the hundreds column. The number in the hundreds column will tell us what to do.

  • If the number is between 0-4 we stay the same, if its between 5-9 we go up once.

  • The number in the thousand’s column will either go up once or stay the same.

  • What happens to the digit to the right of the hundreds place? It becomes a zero.
