The surface of the earth is covered by a layer of rock called the earth's crust

Rocks and minerals
The surface of the earth is covered with rocks, minerals and soil.
Rocks are made of grains of minerals.
In some rocks the minerals form small crystals.
Example: granite is a rock made from quite large crystals of three different minerals called quartz, feldspar and mica.

Soil
is made up of small particles of rocks and minerals. Soil also contains the remains of plants, animal and waste products such as dung, that called as humus.
Soil may have different properties that important for growing crops.
For example: sandy soil, clay soil.
